HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS

A healthy body weight, with a healthy distribution of fat is important for living longer and feeling well.

Being underweight is associated with problems such as reduced fertility, bone thinning, rapid aging and hormone imbalance. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is below 20, you should ensure that you eat a nutritionally balanced diet, avoid calorie counting and overtraining.

Being overweight or obese is proven to increase your risk of most, if not all age-related problems. Whether it is hip and knee pains from osteoarthritis, reflux symptoms, hiatus hernia, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gallstones – all of these are associated with being overweight.

By reducing just 5% of your body weight, from a starting BMI of 27 or more, it has been proven that you can reduce your risk of all these problems.

What is the medical weight loss programme?

The medical weight loss programme consists of a full package of doctor led  consultation, recommendations for blood tests, nutritional support with a low calorie diet plan consultant and medication approved by the MHRA for weight reduction (Saxenda® liraglutide).

While the weight loss injection (Saxenda®) will help you to achieve weight loss, it is long term changes that will be beneficial to your health. For this, you need to ensure that you don’t depend only on medication, but make positive changes to your lifestyle, your eating habits, and your mindset about healthy weight.

How does it work?

Saxenda®, a prescription only weight loss medicine that contains the active substance liraglutide. Similar to the natural occurring hormone GLP-1 that is released when you eat, Saxenda® acts on the appetite receptors in the brain to make you feel full much sooner after eating.

How will the medication help?

While on Saxenda®, you can eat much smaller portions without feeling hungry which means you lose weight without the deprivation you can feel when trying to diet alone. If you have a condition such as Type 2 Diabetes that would improve with weight loss, you can successfully complete your chosen low calorie diet plan with less hunger and craving.

1

CONSULTATION

The first step is a blood test and consultation with Doctor Inga to assess whether you will benefit from going on the programme.

2

SUPPORT

During your medication course, you will be supported with symptom advise, nutritional advise and signposting to behavioural support specialists, in order to help you make real changes to your behaviours and eating habits.

3

ONGOING ADVICE

After achieving your weight loss target, you may wish to stop medication, but many prefer to carry on with a low dose of the medication to continue to benefit from the appetite control and to maintain their weight. Saxenda® is safe for long term use.
